How Ivanchuk plays

Ivanchuk is chess's great original: a player of enormous creativity and calculation who could beat anyone on his day and has won almost every major tournament at least once. His opening knowledge is encyclopaedic and his ideas are often unlike anyone else's.

What to learn from Ivanchuk

Ivanchuk's games repay slow study because his plans aren't obvious. Notice how he finds unusual squares for his pieces and how he is willing to change the character of a position completely with one move.
