How Giri plays

Giri is famous for deep opening preparation and a solid, precise style that makes him very hard to beat. A five-time Dutch champion, he has won top events including Tata Steel in Wijk aan Zee, and his understanding of the openings is among the best in the world.

What to learn from Giri

Giri's games show how to use preparation: he reaches positions he understands better than his opponents and then plays them accurately. His play with Black in the Najdorf and the Grünfeld is a model.
