Triangle Mate

Checkmate pattern250 puzzles

A queen and rook form a triangle with the king. The queen gives check from a diagonally neighbouring square, and the rook protects it while sealing off the escape squares.

How to spot it

With a queen and rook close to the enemy king, look for a queen check that the rook can protect along the rank or file.

How it arises

A queen and rook arrive close to a king on the edge of the board. The queen checks from a square diagonally next to the king, and the rook on the same rank protects it and covers the escape squares.

A worked example

1.Qd7#

1.Qd7#. The rook on f7 protects the queen along the rank and covers f8; the queen covers d8, e7 and e8's neighbours.

How to defend against it

With the enemy queen and a rook near your king, keep a piece that can block the seventh rank, and keep the king off the edge if you can.
