Back Rank Mate

Checkmate pattern250 puzzles

A rook or queen mates the king along the back rank, where it is boxed in by its own pawns. It is the most common checkmate in club games because castled kings so often have no escape square.

How to spot it

If the enemy king has no 'luft' (a pawn moved to make a escape square) and the back rank is only lightly guarded, look for a rook or queen check there, even if it costs material first.

How it arises

Whenever a castled king has all three pawns still in front of it and the back rank is guarded by only one rook or queen. A deflection sacrifice removes or overloads that guard, and the next rook or queen check on the back rank is mate.

A worked example

White to move
1.Qe8+ Rxe8 2.Rxe8#

1.Qe8+! Rxe8 2.Rxe8#. The queen is given up to drag the rook off its guard duty, and the second rook mates.

How to defend against it

Make an escape square (luft) with …h6 or …g6 once the middlegame starts, keep a rook or queen on the back rank, and count how many pieces your opponent can bring to it.
