Blind Swine Mate

Checkmate pattern250 puzzles

Two rooks doubled on the seventh rank (the 'blind swine', or pigs) team up against a king in the corner. One rook gives check while the other protects it, and the king's own pieces block the way out.

How to spot it

Get both rooks to the seventh rank. Against a cornered king they can often mate even without help from the rest of your army.

How it arises

Two rooks reach the seventh rank, often after the enemy queen has been exchanged. Against a king in the corner with a pawn on h7 or g7 they take the pawns one at a time with check and finish on g7 and h7.

A worked example

White to move
1.Rxg7+ Kh8 2.Rxh7+ Kg8 3.Rbg7#

1.Rxg7+ Kh8 2.Rxh7+ Kg8 3.Rbg7#. Each capture comes with check, so the king has no time to escape.

How to defend against it

Never let both enemy rooks onto your seventh rank. Keep one rook on the rank yourself, and challenge an enemy rook that lands there before the second one can join it.
