Other Gambits for White

Gambit19 linesYou play White

A collection of less common White gambits, including the Greco/Møller, Jerome, Urusov, Belgrade and the Staunton Gambit against the Dutch. Each gives material early for faster development, open lines and an attack.

The idea

Less common White gambits with the same spirit as the famous ones: the Greco and Møller Attacks in the Italian (c3 and d4 with a piece sacrifice on the way), the Jerome (the wild Bxf7+ in the Giuoco Piano), the Urusov in the Bishop's Opening, the Belgrade in the Four Knights and a few more. Each offers material for a lead in development and open lines against f7.

What happens next

The theme in all of them is to open the centre while Black's king is still on e8, bring the queen to b3, f3 or h5, and get the rooks to the open files. The moves differ, the plan doesn't: develop with threats, and don't let the opponent catch up.

How to play against it

The same recipe works against most: give material back when it buys safety, develop the kingside knight early, castle, and look for …d5 to hit back in the centre. Most of these gambits are fine for a blitz game and harmless against a calm defender.
