Other Gambits for Black
A collection of less common Black gambits, including the Lucchini, Rousseau, Blackburne–Shilling, Gajewski, Spanish, Calabrese, Icelandic and Portuguese. Each offers material early for active pieces and quick counterplay.
The idea
Less common Black gambits, including the Lucchini (…f5 in the Italian), the Rousseau, the Blackburne–Shilling trap (…Nd4 against the Italian, hoping for Nxe5?) and others. Each gives a pawn, or risks one, to grab the initiative early and set a trap for a careless opponent.
What happens next
Black's plan is fast development and threats against f2 and the e4 pawn: …Nf6, …Bc5 and …d5, with the queen coming to g5 or h4 in the sharper lines. The traps mostly rely on White taking a pawn that should be left alone.
How to play against it
White should decline the bait and keep developing. Against the Blackburne–Shilling, don't play Nxe5?; play Nxd4 or c3. Against …f5 ideas, d3 and Nc3 keep the centre solid and the bishop on c4 points at an exposed king.
