Quiet Move
A move with no check or capture that sets up a threat your opponent can't meet. Quiet moves are the hardest tactics to see because nothing looks forcing.
How to spot it
Not every winning move is a check or a capture. Look for moves that create two threats at once, or one threat your opponent can't meet: a queen move that eyes both a mate and a loose rook, a pawn push that takes away an escape square.
A worked example
1.Qd4! makes no check and takes nothing, but it threatens both 2.Qxg7# (with the bishop on b2 behind) and 2.Qxa7. Black can stop only one: after 1…f6 2.Qxa7 wins the rook.
Why it works
Quiet moves are hard to find because nothing in the position shouts. But a threat that can't be parried is just as decisive as a check, and a double threat from a quiet move is one of the strongest things you can do.
How to defend against it
After every enemy move, however harmless it looks, ask 'what does that threaten?' and 'what will it threaten next?'. Quiet moves are only dangerous to players who assume a move without a check or capture does nothing.
