Göring Gambit
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.c3. Like the Danish Gambit, but with the knight already on f3. White gives a pawn for rapid development and open lines for the bishops.
The idea
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.c3 is the Danish idea with the knights already on f3 and c6. After 4…dxc3 5.Nxc3 White has quick development and the open c- and d-files; 5.Bc4 offers a second pawn in the full Danish style. The bishops on c4 and b2 (or c3) aim at f7 and g7.
What happens next
White castles quickly and brings the queen to b3 or e2 and the rooks to the d- and e-files, with e5 to open lines and Nd5 or Ng5 against f7. As in the Danish, one slow move by Black and the pressure turns into a direct attack.
How to play against it
Black's best is to decline with 4…d5!, giving the pawn straight back: 5.exd5 Qxd5 6.cxd4 Bg4 and Black is comfortable. If you accept, 4…dxc3 5.Nxc3 Bb4 followed by …Nf6 and …d6 is solid, and 5.Bc4 cxb2 6.Bxb2 d5! returns the extra pawn to open lines.
