Danish–Göring Gambit (2.d4 exd4 3.c3)

Gambit38 linesYou play White

White plays 1.e4 e5 2.d4 and, after 2...exd4, 3.c3, offering a pawn for development (the Danish move order). If Black takes and White recaptures with Nxc3, play reaches Göring Gambit positions. Declined lines are covered too.

Danish–Göring Gambit (2.d4 exd4 3.c3) after 1.e4 e5 2.d4 Nc6 3.Nf3 d6

The idea

The Danish and Göring gambits grouped by their starting moves: after 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 White plays 3.c3, offering a pawn for development. Black can take (3…dxc3), decline with 3…d5, or hold the pawn with 3…d3 or 3…Nc6. In every line White's aim is the same: bishops on c4 and b2 or c3, and open files.

What happens next

White follows up with Nxc3 or Bc4, Nf3, O-O and Qb3 against f7 or Qe2 and Rd1. e5 to open the long diagonal and Nd5 are the typical attacking moves. If Black returns the pawn, White should be content with quick development and equal material.

How to play against it

3…d5! is the standard equaliser, returning the pawn at once: 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.cxd4 Nc6 6.Nf3 Bg4. Taking is also fine if Black develops quickly with …d5 later; the lines 3…dxc3 4.Nxc3 Bb4 and 4.Bc4 cxb2 5.Bxb2 d5! are the ones to know.
