Albin Countergambit
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5. Black offers the e-pawn to meet the Queen's Gambit with an attack. After 3.dxe5 d4, Black's pawn cramps White and sets traps, such as the Lasker Trap.
The idea
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5 meets the Queen's Gambit with a gambit of Black's own. After 3.dxe5 d4 the d-pawn cramps White, and the famous trap 4.e3? Bb4+ 5.Bd2 dxe3 6.Bxb4 exf2+ 7.Ke2 fxg1=N+ is one of the best-known in chess. Black develops with …Nc6, …Bg4 or …Be6 and often castles queenside.
What happens next
Black's set-up is …Nc6, …Nge7 or …Bg4, …Qd7 and …O-O-O, with the d4 pawn as a wedge and the e5 pawn as a target. Play on the kingside with …h5 and …g5 is also common. Keeping the d4 pawn protected is the key to the whole opening.
How to play against it
White should play 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.g3 and fianchetto, when the bishop on g2 and the pressure on d4 give a comfortable game. Avoid 4.e3? altogether. a3 and Nbd2 with e4 or b4 later are the plans.
